English term

manualized protocol

English Social Sciences Psychology substance abuse couple therapy
It comes from a handbok about Behavioral Couple Therapy. At some point the authors talk about different kinds of sessions of this BCT where they used manualized protocol.
My question is what is manualized protocol? Is it shorter than handbook?
Can anybody help me? I have googled a lot on this, but cannot find a definition.

Votes to reclassify question as PRO/non-PRO:

PRO (3): Mark Berelekhis, Terry Burgess, Will Matter

When entering new questions, KudoZ askers are given an opportunity* to classify the difficulty of their questions as 'easy' or 'pro'. If you feel a question marked 'easy' should actually be marked 'pro', and if you have earned more than 20 KudoZ points, you can click the "Vote PRO" button to recommend that change.

How to tell the difference between "easy" and "pro" questions:

An easy question is one that any bilingual person would be able to answer correctly. (Or in the case of monolingual questions, an easy question is one that any native speaker of the language would be able to answer correctly.)

A pro question is anything else... in other words, any question that requires knowledge or skills that are specialized (even slightly).

Another way to think of the difficulty levels is this: an easy question is one that deals with everyday conversation. A pro question is anything else.

When deciding between easy and pro, err on the side of pro. Most questions will be pro.

* Note: non-member askers are not given the option of entering 'pro' questions; the only way for their questions to be classified as 'pro' is for a ProZ.com member or members to re-classify it.

Discussion

We learned about practical barriers in implementing BCT from our experiences with the community-based treatment programs in which we have conducted research or taining projects on BCT. In these projects, we trained counselors employed in these settings to deliver BCT using manualized protocol.
This is the only place where this manualized protocol is mentioned.
Thank you all for your help so far.

It's always best to work with the original text. Do you have an English sentence in which your term appears?
JaneTranslates May 9, 2008:
I don't get it. I pressed a button that said "Vote PRO" and now my name is listed as having voted non-Pro. For the record, I consider this a Pro question.

manual that outlines the treatment procedure(s)

Procedure meaning a set of rules and steps to follow, etc. Its length can vary greatly, but it sounds like this particular manual isn't too thin.
Peer comment(s):

neutral Jack Dunwell : Mark, don't you think "manualized" describes the procedures. Actually you have defined it as a manual, when it's actually the procedures that we're talking about

Of course. That's exactly what I said.
agree Gary D : The army would have a manualized protocol, for instance.

Thank you, Gary. I would imagine so :)

using a protocol that is defined by or described in a manual

Your original phrase is somewhat awkward and does not sound particularly natural. Somewhat unnatural English. That being said, a "manualized protocol" means a protocol that follows steps or procedures, as outlined in a manual. The manual will say "First you do this....". "Then you do this...." "If X happens do this and if Y happens do this....." I hope that this helps to answer your question.
Note from asker:
This is not an original phrase I just tried to described it. I am not a native speaker, forgive me my awkwardness.
Peer comment(s):

neutral Jack Dunwell : Will are we giving alternative wording for both "manualized" and "protocol" ?
