English term

boiler stove

English Tech/Engineering Furniture / Household Appliances
What do you Americans call these?

You can see lots of pictures of them on Google images if you enter "boiler stove", but they all seem to have UK web addresses, leading me to think they must be called something else on the other side of the pond.

TIA to anyone who can help!

Demi Ebrite Jun 25, 2008:
David, can you give more context here, as it is currently uncommon to use boiler furnaces which heat with water and stream, but it was once common practice to do so.
warren Jun 24, 2008:
Having a look at the "boiler stoves" on google I would say...guess, the expression which they are using comes from older usage, maybe going back to steam engines and here being used as a general term.
jccantrell Jun 24, 2008:
I believe Ken is right. In NA, you will find furnaces, boilers, hot water heaters, wood-burning stoves (which appear closest to the pics, but do not usually heat water unless in a pot on top). You may have to explain all this to the client.

boiler stove

Yo can use "boiler stove". That's what you have, and it would be understood; it is not totally unknown in the US.
Simply, they tend to qualify the fuel type, and wood, or pellets, (often corn pellets) are more common than other type of fuel.

4 KudoZ points awarded for this answer. Comment: "Thanks to all for your help, especially also Demi. I was very tempted by "wood stove" but plumped for "boiler stove" in the end to maintain generality, reassured by juvera's evidence that such things aren't completely unknown in the US."

Furnace

although the term would also be used in British English
Note from asker:
Thanks, but when I google "furnace", I get pictures of functional things that live in the cellar rather than in the these designer objects.

boiler

It is my understanding, and explained in a link, that a furnace heats the air but a boiler heats water.

The water is then pumped, usually in a closed loop, through radiators in the house.
Note from asker:
Thanks, but I think "boiler" by itself is too general. (I'm actually looking for the AE translation of German "Kaminheizkessel" - "boiler stove" is just fine in BE, but the translation is supposed to be AE.)

The scarcity of North American hits is probaby a consequence of the extreme rarity of hot-water heating systems in NA.

back-boiler

For the UK, I'd set a higher CL, but this might even apply in N America too. It's a boiler at the back of a fireplace.

wood stove

From what I can see, a 'boiler stove' is the same as as a 'wood stove', operating on wood or pellet fuel (pellets are made of wood)

There are in fact 'boilers', or 'furnaces' which heat by circulating water through radiators placed in each room. These were popular in the early part of the last century, and one can still find them in old buildings. Generally they are replaced with gas furnaces, or electric heat is installed. Where city ordinances allow, many people use wood stoves to heat or augment heat, and they can be very decorative.

Thank you!
disagree juvera : Boiler stoves can be multi-fuel, wood stove is only one type of boiler stove..

In the U.S. we don't market 'boiler stoves'. The closest I can get is wood stoves; Lopi (see URL) makes stoves for wood, pellets, gas and electric, but they market them under 'wood stoves', as that is what one woud seek for alternative home heating.
neutral Jack Dunwell : Mark Twain called them the American wood stove(of whatever breed is a terror). The origin is wood. It's not a masonry stove.//Demi, if it's soapstone, eg Tulikivi, it's a masonry stove. I have the MHA of N Am portfolio here.

Thank you ~ Most all I have seen are of iron or soapstone . . . Fourth, you're right about soapstone! Still, they burn wood ~
