8.8.8 Ship Work – General

At all times, those working onboard vessels must maintain their concentration and awareness to remain safe whilst working in such environments, paying particular attention to the path of the boom of the mobile harbour crane in relation to their position.

Personnel shall at all times stand to the vessel accommodation side of any bay being worked by the mobile harbour crane.

Personnel shall at all times ensure that they are a minimum of three containers away in a bay from where the crane is working.

Personnel MUST NEVER position themselves directly adjacent to where the mobile harbour crane is loading or discharging as the load may swing without warning.

Men shall not work in such a location that they may be unsighted by the crane driver, e.g. in close proximity to tower stows.

EXTREME CARE MUST BE TAKEN WHEN ATTEMPTING TO FREE JAMMED CONTAINER FITTINGS when working the mobile harbour crane. Refer to Section 12.14 - Jammed Container Fittings of the Safety Procedures for details of the specific procedures to be followed.
