English to Spanish Social Sciences Social Science, Sociology, Ethics, etc. census

As I understand it, this term refers to people changing how they classify themselves on the census, without changing their outward appearance. So think here the many 'Hispanics' in the US who changed their classification to white in the last census, rather than Rachel Dolezal. I'm looking for something more specific than cambio de raza, which I think misleadingly makes people think of changing outward appearance. Thanks for your suggestions!
