Hi all,
I'm a translation student also working as an English-Spanish researcher and referral provider. Much of my formal work involves sending referrals to relevant government agencies and writing small blurbs to LEP clients explaining how to apply to government-run social service assistance programs in the US (e.g. SNAP/food stamps, Section 8/housing choice vouchers). Most agencies simply translate apply as "solicitar" but I am wondering if this is the only usable term or if there are other alternatives, seeing as I don't want to repeat myself constantly and it still sounds a bit odd given the false cognate of soliciting. When I was working at a nonprofit in Chile on grant applications previously I often heard "postular." Does it ever make sense to use postular in the American/social service context? Or are there other alternate wordings you all might recommend? Thanks!

"postularse" a un puesto, cargo - postularse para una beca
Hi Shannon, I´d say that ¨postularse" para xxxx is perfectly ok. I wouldn´t use ¨solicitar", I can't imagine in which context. I´d even use "presentarse" a una entrevista de trabajo.

Solicitar/postular/hacer una petición/tramitar
Hi Shannon,
Both "solicitar" and "postular" are excellent options. Nevertheless, take into account that "postular" also means proposing oneself as a candidate for something. Have you considered "hacer una solicitud/petición"? Another posible option is "demandar" but, of course, it does sound a little bossy. "Gestionar" and "tramitar" might be viable options as well, depending on the context.

: O hacer una instancia, aunque dependerá del contexto específico o sonará excesivamente formal. Pero sí, para tranquilidad del Asker, "solicitar" en este caso resulta perfectamente ajustado.
