English term

Adobe Acrobat Reader / Backbone

English to Portuguese Tech/Engineering
Hello dear Colleagues!

I would like to know whether the programa "Adobe acrobat reader" is usually translated into Brazilian Portuguese. Maybe the English word is used?

The other term appears in the following sentence: "the computer center is connected to Internet to a Siemens Backbone"

I would really appreciate if I could get some help.

Thanks a lot!

"Adobe Acrobat reader" and "Siemens backbone"

Márcia:

As for all brand/product names, "Adobe Acrobat reader" is not to be translated. Leave as is.
Regarding "backbone" it is definitely a word to be translated, although many Brazilians would leave it in English. As you know, its litteral translation is "espinha dorsal" - that's, in fact, the idea.
I suggest that you translate the expression into "comunicação central da Siemens".
I hope it helps.

Adobe Acrobat Reader / Backbone da Siemens

Adobe Acrobat Reader, as we usually do with brands and trade names is not translated.
As for backbone, this is the definition provided by the US Federal Standard 1037C: "backbone: 1. The high-traffic-density connectivity portion of any communications network. (188) 2. In packet-switched networks, a primary forward-direction path traced sequentially through two or more major relay or switching stations. Note: In packet-switched networks, a backbone consists primarily of switches and interswitch trunks." It is usually not translated either. Siemens is also a brand; therefore "Backbone da Siemens". I would not use capital letter for "backbone", though... Good luck!

Adobe Acrobat Reader / Backbone Siemens

Como já disse o fabcid, o nome próprio do programa não se traduz. No entanto, verifiquei na Internet e os backbones de marcas próprias são usados como indicado acima, com maiúscula e sem "da" (empresa) -- que aliás bate com a forma usada no texto original.
