I can not remember ever using 3/6/9 Uhr Stellung in German, Are there other options like auf 90/180/270 Grad stellen, nach rechts/unten/links stellen etc.

Ship approaching at ten o'clock, es nähert sich ein Schiff auf 10 Uhr.

Knopf auf 1/4 vor oder 20 nach ist völlig ok IMHO. I mentioned the ship myself in the 1st ex. Tnx 4 ure comment anyway.
