Bonjour,

Comment traduire tea dress en français, s.v.p.?

Vintage tea dress

Merci!

Discussion

Hélène OShea Jan 25, 2021:
I agree with Yvonne and would suggest "robe style rétro" or "robe années 50/60" but seeing the photo, certainly not "robe de cocktail" or even less "robe champêtre"!
Yvonne Gallagher Jan 25, 2021:
@ Asker Thanks. I'd call that type of dress a "rockabilly dress" or a "swing prom dress" in English rather than a tea dress though it can be the latter as well. Maybe just use vintage and the year? I think Hélène's post was more indicative of what tea dresses look like from the 40s/50s
TB CommuniCAT (asker) Jan 25, 2021:
@Yvonne Client said it's a 1950 style and looks more or less like this:

Yvonne Gallagher Jan 25, 2021:
@ Asker what period are we talking about and do you have a picture of the dress?
TB CommuniCAT (asker) Jan 24, 2021:
@ormiston Your suggestion of robe champêtre might work. It has the idea of vintage in it too. Thanks!

I am not sure if you can amend your answer for points.

This site shows what a tea dress is. I doubt that there is an equivalent in French.
ormiston Jan 24, 2021:
Hey, it does exist There are photos online. Seems to be a 40's inspired oriental look easy print dress, but in French ?? Pour le team time ?!:
Tea Dress was the home dress that women in the 40s used to wear around the house. This dress can be characterized as a loose-lined unstructured silhouette that was easy and comfortable to wear. ... Basically, it is a dress with light fabric and bright prints that comes in lively colors and different patterns.
david henrion Jan 24, 2021:
Wouldn't it be a typo for T dress ?

Note from asker:

Citation de votre site : What is a tea dress? It’s a dress you wear to have tea...., and very cocktail appropriate
disagree Yvonne Gallagher : not a cocktail dress which is formal dress. Yes, you can sip a cocktail in a tea dress but more casually with your lady friends

merci
neutral Suzie Withers : as others have said, if "robe de cocktail" is the same as a "cocktail dress" (which it seems to be), then it is more formal and structured than a tea dress. The tea dress is typically made with a lighter fabric and is far more casual.

merci
disagree Helene Carrasco-Nabih : Too formal!

Example sentence:

Femme Robe Florale De Thé avec Taille Élastique

Robe de thé flottante...

Peer comment(s):

neutral ormiston : these literal translations mean little. Just tested them on a French person!

Certainly not "robe de cocktail" in any case.
neutral Yvonne Gallagher : too literal

Robe d'intérieur

You wouldn't go wrong with this I'd say but you could add the fabric/pattern details if you have them

Ah, "petite robe vintage" might work then as a "passe-partout" frock.A kind of low key equivalent of the little black dress do you have a picture ?

I googled "robe champêtre' and found photos VERY similar to the ones for tea dress!
Note from asker:
I am not sure with "intérieur" because further down it says that the dress is worn for party, wedding, church.
Peer comment(s):

disagree Yvonne Gallagher : doesn't fit the look? Google translates literally as "indoor dress". Not quite

disagree Sandra Mouton : This is a completely different outfit from a tea dress

Sure but see the definition of tea dress in discussion box. I think it's a misnomer in the ST.

--------------------------------------------------

--------------------------------------------------

Finalement je dirais : robe (de sortie) VINTAGE (je souligne) puisque le thé est en effet une occasion un peu "old fashion" de se retrouver entre amis et le cocktail une situation un peu trop formelle pour tout à fait correspondre à ce dont il s'agit ici;

Peer comment(s):

agree Eliza Hall : Yes, and maybe "robe imprimée dite 'de thé'"? https://thefashiontag.com/tea-dresses/
2 hrs
Merci Eliza ! Puet-être l'explication ci-dessus vous conviendrait-elle ?
neutral Yvonne Gallagher : far too vague, covers a multitude of styles and is not necessarily printed or floral
