Character Displacement
The third possible outcome of competition between two species for the same niche is called character displacement. When two species compete for the same niche, they develop differently than they would if they didn't co-exist. Imagine two species of birds. In areas where both species compete, each species adapts to eating different food. One species might develop a long, thin bill which is adapted to eating insects. The second species might have a short, thick bill that is better suited for eating seeds. Where the species live apart, they are about the same shape and size and they eat similar foods. In areas where there is competition between the species, each species evolves characteristics that lessen competition and allow it to eat different foods. The result is that in areas where the two species co-exist, each adopts a different niche. In areas where there is no competition between the species, each species occupies a larger, more general niche.
