Arabic term

صحيح و حديث

Arabic to English Art/Literary Religion
Can we explain both interchangeably, ie, as the actions and deeds of the prophet Mohammed (pbuh)? If not, what is the most authentic translation for each?

authentic hadith and hadith

As you probably know, the hadith is classified based on the soundness of the chain of narration and the documented degree of trustworthiness of each link in the chain (i.e. the narrators). The classification can vary in its detail from one scholar of hadith (muhaddith) to another, but the following main levels of authenticity are common among them are:
صحيح حسن ضعيف موضوع

Meaning: authentic, sound, weak, and forged

Islamic jurisprudence uses the Sahih Hadith as a source of Sharia in addition to the Quran. That is why the text refers more frequently to Sahih hadith than to any of the other categories. The frequency led to a shorthand where the following two expressions are equivalent:

وفي الحديث الصحيح أن ألله إذا أحب عبداً كان سمعه الذي يسمع به إلخ
وفي الصحيح أن ألله إذا أحب عبداً كان سمعه الذي يسمع به إلخ

So the answer to your question is that صحيح and حديث صحيح can be used interchangeably. However, if the word حديث is used without the classification, the reader cannot assume that the hadith is sahih. A scholarly text will usually provide a footnote that mentions a reference to the hadith collection and classification.

Therefore, if the word Sahih is used as a nound, you can therefore translate it as \"authentic hadith\", but if the word hadith is used without qualification, you leave it without qualification.

I hope this clarifies the subject.

Hadith

Hi Jacquese,

The transliteration "Hadith" is what is used in most of the articles I came across, including Bernard Lewis' books. The term "Hadith" is defined as أقوال النبي (صلى الله عليه وسلم)، وأفعاله، وتقريراته، وصفاته الخِلقية، والخُلقية. The term "Sahih", on the other hand, is an adjective pertaining to the validity of the Hadith. A Hadith is said to be "Sahih" only if it can be traced to a valid source close to the Prophet Mohammed. الحديث الصحيح: وهو الحديث المسند المتصل برواية العدل الضابط عن مثله إلى منتهاه من غير شذوذ ولا علة قارحة. There are a few anthologies of Hadiths in Arabic, all called "Sahihs": Bukhari's is the most authoritative.

The first link is for the definition of Hadith

Hope that helps a bit.

Sahih and Hadith

The information provided by Sam and Alaa are correct. However, I have the impression that صحيح refers to the actual collection صحيح مسلم وصحيح بخاري etc, while حديث is exactly like the definition Sam provided. I would usually use the term "Sahih", like we do with "Hadith" and add a footnote to explain the concept. This is however, is a personal opinion.however, is a personal opinion.
