soybean sprouts

soy(-a) sprouts

Although they are not so popular as mung bean or alfalfa sprouts, soy sprouts (also called soybean sprouts) are an excellent source of proteins, vitamins and isoflavones. During sprouting most of the undesirable carbohydrates are metabolised, the protein digestibility improves and the trypsin inhibitors are inactivated. Unique is the formation of ascorbic acid (vitamin C) during sprouting.

soybean sprouts Notes: These sturdy, crunchy sprouts are good in salads or stir-fries. They become bitter when the tails get too long, so eat them soon after they sprout. Substitutes: mung bean sprouts (smaller, less bean-like flavor)

You are right about bone-in veal. Veal on the bone is also possible but not so common.
Peer comment(s):

agree David Knowles : Funny - I was going to say "veal on the bone"!
1 min
Thanks. Veal on the bone was the first thing that came to mind for me too, but a Google check showed far more boned-in veal. Maybe that's the only term they use for it in the USA.
neutral Dorene Cornwell : This is British English, judging by the citations. On this side of the pond, they are soybean sprouts or maybe "sprouted soybeans"
1 hr
OK, I guess we are divided by our common language as usual.

boine-in veal with soybean sprouts

You're right about the bone-in veal and
Dorene Cornwell is correct about soybean sprouts (at least here in the US of A). Fact, I have some sprouting now along with mung beans! You're all welcomed to eat some along with Georgia (USA) hog jaws, blackeye peas. and collard greens!!

sprouts

Menus almost never specify soybean sprouts. So there is .nNo need to be specific, since it is just assumed. It also sounds wrong.
So, "Bone-in veal with sprouts." or "Bone-in veal served with sprouts."

"bone-in veal" 668 hits on google.
"served with sprouts" 116 hits on google.

\"served with alfalfa sprouts\" 1 - 10 of about 759 for \"served with alfalfa sprouts\". (0.40 seconds)
\"with alfalfa sprouts\" Results 1 - 10 of about 960 for \"with alfalfa sprouts\". (1.15 seconds)

Ahem, like mama always said, never say never. I stand corrected and from this point shall go forth and sin no more. That said, \"sprouts\" is still an acceptable variant and more common in usage.
Peer comment(s):

agree gtreyger (X) : That is the ONLY way that I've seen it on the menus. What other kind of sprouts are there?
49 mins
Thank you.
neutral Jack slep : other sprouts are: adzuki bean, alfalfa, broccoli, garbanzo, green lentils, green peas, onion, radis, red clover, mung beans, wheat. No, I'm not a vegetarian - just like sprouts!
1 hr
Right, but let's say you're the средный американец....where, oh where will you see "soybean sprouts" actually listed on a menu? Nowhere. And who, upon hearing the word "sprout" thinks of mung beans? Impressive list though, and thanks for the info.
neutral Olga Judina : how about brussels sprouts for one? 306,000 for "brussels sprouts" http://www.isga-sprouts.org/nutritio.htm
1 hr
Кажется что это доходит до абсурда. Simply talking common sense. It's highly unlikely that someone will see "bone-in veal with sprouts" and think of brussel sprouts.
neutral Blithe : Where can you see soybean or alfalfa or wheat sprouts on a menu? California, for one. Some places in NYC. I wouldn't say "nowhere" with such confidence.You are obviously not a fan of fancy restaurants +OK, agree, let it be "fancy":).and sprouts are good:)

See note above. Oh, and I wouldn't say that I am "obviously not a fan of fancy restaurants" with such confidence. :P Specifying the type of sprout does not a fancy restaurant make.+++ Договорились
