English term

Platform LCZ

English Science Chemistry; Chem Sci/Eng
Context: Chemical shifts values are indicated in parts per million (ppm) with reference to tetramethylsilane (TMS) as the internal standard. The LC/MS are typically run on a Micromass Platform LCZ.

Questions: I know "Micromass" is the name of a company. So what is "Platform LCZ"? From somewhere I know ¡°Micromass' Platform LCZ Detector is a single-quadrupole API mass spectrometer incorporating Micromass' ZSPRAY interface.¡± Can somebody tell me what ¡± Platform LCZ¡± really is ? Is it just a trade name? What does ¡°LCZ¡± stand for. If it is a mass spectrometer, how can both LC(liquid chromatography)and MS(mass spectrography) be run on it? Thank you very, very much in advance!

trade name

There are two different analyses involved, NMR and LC/MS. The latter is performed on a "Micromass Platform LCZ" system which is apparently a trade name for a popular LC/MS system, if Google is to be believed.

MS is a quite popular detector stage for liquid chromatography.

neutral Robert Tucker (X) : It looks to me to be a mass spectrometer, having the Z-Spray injection system, to be used in tandem with liquid chromatography. Is that what you mean? Probably necessary to register on the Waters site to get further information.

That is indeed what I mean. And that the phrase under question is a trade mark: http://64.233.187.104/search?q=cache:www.waters.com/WatersDi...

possible explanation

From the syntax of the text, I guess it is a somewhat overliteral translation from German or a similar language where qualifiers are typically placed after nouns (e.g. 'CPU Pentium III' in German vs. 'Pentium III CPU' in English), and 'Plattform' is currently a fashionable word in German (and other languages) for almost any sort of system that can be used for some purpose (e.g. computer platform, communications platform, ...).

I would thus suggest that in normal English this should read 'Micromass LCZ system', or even better 'Micromass LCZ analyser' (or whatever the proper descriptive name is for the system in question).
