keep the French and provide explanation

Is very French terminology (except for copropriété of course). I'd keep it and add a note explaining.
Vertical is the actual building and appurtenances
Horizontal is the entire property (résidence)including common areas. You may be able to find a clearer explanation.

1 - DEFINITION

On distingue, classiquement :

added complication

The terms can also apply to the case of houses which have been divided between several owners, for ex. brothers and sisters who inherit. Depending on the house, of course, it might be divided horizontally (I take the ground floor, my sister takes the first floor) or vertically (I take the blue wing, she takes the green wing, and we own the central part, where the servants sleep, jointly): somewhere on the web there is reference to outside stairs often being a sign that a house has been divided in either of these manners.
