voltage/current drive regulation (VDR/CDR)
Two control methods are supported: voltage drive regulation (VDR) and current drive regulation (CDR). In VDR,
the device outputs a PWM voltage in which the duty cycle
is programmed using SPI. For a given supply voltage and
solenoid resistor, the output current is proportional to the
programmed duty cycle. In CDR, an internal integrated
lossless current sensing (ICS) circuit senses the output

Ten sterownik obsługuje dwie metody sterowania: regulację wysterowania napięciowego (VDR) i regulację wysterowania prądowego (CDR). Regulacja wysterowania prądowego (CDR) jest formą sterowania w pętli zamkniętej, w której zintegrowany bezstratny obwód pomiaru prądu mierzy prąd wyjściowy i porównuje go z wewnętrznym, programowanym prądem referencyjnym.

In the case of a current controlled device, the voltage is almost independent of the current, and the amount of current is what matters for control.

The phrase "almost independent" isn't the same as "completely independent". But it's close enough to make it very difficult to reliably use a constant regulated voltage to control a current-controlled device, and likewise difficult to use a constant regulated current to reliably control a voltage-controlled device.
