Spanish term

unidades de significado

Spanish to English Social Sciences Education / Pedagogy Data analysis / Statistics
SPAIN. This term appears in the results section of an article about academic dropout. I'm not sure if the appropriate translation for "significado" is significance or meaning in this case (I think it's the former, but would like some reassurance).

"En concreto, en este manuscrito se presentan los resultados relacionados con la categoría “estudios universitarios” de la que derivaron 391 unidades de significado. "

@Neil I’m using my phone so research is difficult but I’ve found the following reference.

meaning units

'The researcher must familiarize him or herself with the data, and he/she has to read through the transcribed text to obtain the sense of the whole, that is, to learn “what is going on?”, before it can be broken down into smaller meaning units. A meaning unit is the smallest unit that contains some of the insights the researcher needs, and it is the constellation of sentences or paragraphs containing aspects related to each other, answering the question set out in the aim (Catanzaro, 1988, Graneheim and Lundman, 2004). Each identified meaning unit is labeled with a code, which should be understood in relation to the context. This procedure is recognized as the “open coding process” in the literature (Berg, 2001)...'

Note from asker:
Tx. I had assumed that "meaning unit" was more common in linguistics and that in this case "significado" might refer to the significance or otherwise of the results.

agree Helena Chavarria : Your answer hadn’t appeared when I started to prepare my answer. I’m writing on my phone, so finding and posting references and links took me longer than usual.

Thank you, Helena!
agree philgoddard : I would expect to see this defined elsewhere in the text, but it doesn't appear to be a statistical term.

meaning units

The codes are compared for differences (i.e., what is unique) and similarities (i.e., what is equal) in the codes, and are made with that aim in mind. Codes with their additional meaning units are grouped together related to its content. The process of categorization (Graneheim & Lundman, 2004) is a stepwise process. Meaning units, codes and categories is scrutinized in relation to each other. During this process categories are reduced in number and expanded in content. Finally is formed four categories and each category is divided into two to four sub-categories (Table 2)

Abstract

Unstructured, qualitative data present a challenge to the nurse researcher. This paper offers a method of focusing on 'meaning units' as the basis of developing a category system for the analysis of interview transcripts. The use of the wordprocessing program WordPerfect is described as a method of automating some of the stages of this form of data analysis. Whilst the computer cannot replace the researcher as a critical reviewer and analyst, it can take over many of the more clerical tasks of the research process.

Thanks for that. I had assumed that it referred to whether the results were (statistically) significant or not...
