Arabic term

فديْن

Arabic to English Art/Literary Poetry & Literature
Hi everyone,

Does this mean their husbands and children were taken? Is this a verb in the passive?

هنا الكثير من الصابرين، نساء فديْن أزواجهن وأولادهنَّ لأن فضاءاتنا ليست آمنة، وغاباتنا تعجُّ بالحروب والمحاربين، الذين لا يتوانون عن خطف الشباب، والمراهقين، ليجندوا إجبارياً لخوض حروب لا يعرفون لصالح مَن اندلعت؟

Thank you.

paid ransoms/sacrificed themselves for

The word فدين isn't in the passive. It can be either they paid a ransom to free their loved ones, or they sacrificed themselves for them. You have more context, so I believe you can make a well-informed decision.

were held to ransom by

The wives were held to ransom by the warriors

It means that the wives were taken instead of their husbands and children by the warriors who demanded a ransom to release them.
