French term

Marin d'État

French to English Other Ships, Sailing, Maritime Birth certificate
Hi,
I am currently translating a French birth certificate for Australia and the father's profession is "Marin d'État".
Could this be "Navy employee"?
Thanks

Florence I agree with 'navy sailor'.

There are big differences between dictionaries, and between the UK and the US, in the definition of 'sailor'. But both the Royal and US Navies refer to all their employees as sailors.

My first thought was 'naval officer', but he might not be an officer.

He's a sailor employed by the State.

military seaman If there's any possibility that use of 'navy' might not be taken to exclude the French merchant navy, 'military seaman' would get around the issue.

navy sailor
