"Gözüne kurban"

Turkish to English Other Other
Hi,

I am thinking of a good translation for "Gözüne kurban" in British English. Do you have any suggestions? Thanks...

Boris Shapiro Sep 30, 2023:
@Asker It also very much depends on what you're trying to achieve. 'A good translation into British English' might require sacrificing literal meaning for idiomatic congruence. Otherwise you get the audience scratching their heads, 'Gee, that's some fancy Middle Eastern language you got there. No-one speaks like that, tho'.

Apple of my eye - but again, it depends on who is saying it and the age of the person, also.
Pervane Kerimova Sep 27, 2023:
I agree, but please remember to speak directly. If you say "let me drown in your eyes", maybe you can turn it into direct speech, not now.
Ahmet Antmen Sep 27, 2023:
Here apple of my eye may be an alternative given that it also creates an emotional association with the counterpart. But still "gözüne kurban" has a deep meaning in poetical terms, meaning İ love your eyes so much that I can even die for them without a thought. So dying for one's eyes brings love and death together as two interrelated units of association, and likewise drowning (in your eyes) also evokes risking death for love.
Pervane Kerimova Sep 26, 2023:
Direct speech As far as I understand correctly, a direct speech is required here. However, there is no direct speech like "Drown in your eyes"

Contexts Hi,
If you give the phrase in a wider context, we may find a more suitable option.
Gözüne kurban [olayım, olurum, olduğum] - you're the apple of my eye

agree zeynep simpson : "(kaşına) gözüne kurban olmak": To love someone to death. (you are the) Apple of my eye or to be head over heels for someone would work.

"Drown in your eyes"

Rather than a literal translation, it might be better to give room for a bit of interpretation and adaptation. To ensure a similar level of emotional intensity, using such a phrase could be a good alternative. One can easily find references in poems or songs just as the one given below.
Peer comment(s):

neutral Pervane Kerimova : I don't think it fits this situation. Drowning in one’s eyes has different meaning. Re: to be creative is good, but here it does not make a sense. Anyway, I explained it in discussion

That's what I would like to say indeed. A direct translation here could not cover the very essence of emotional meaning given here. Therefore, a creative interpretation is required here. There might be other alternatives, but not a word to word translation

Or we could say I'm a victim of your eyes.

There are song lyrics such as; I am the victim of your love.

If you handle what you dream
So satisfied it seems
The apple of your eye
I still wondered over him
Your taste has sunken us in
Possessed you will come find

I'm a victim of your love
I'm a victim of your love

Your eyes worth a world

agree Pervane Kerimova : ...worth the world https://tureng.com/tr/turkce-ingilizce/worth the world

neutral Boris Shapiro : Sounds nowhere near idiomatic for a lvl 5 confidence answer, to be honest. Try looking it up (zero hits) and compare with smth like 'mean a world to me'
