English term

moments of happenings, of now-events

English Social Sciences Psychology memory integration
Dear colleagues,
I’m not sure about the meaning of “moments of happenings, of now-events”, in the passage below about memory integration taken from the book Intraconnected.
Thank you so much for your help!
*********************

The domain of memory integration: We live in bodies that remember experiences across the flow of energy, a flow of change in this macrostate realm we’ve named “time.” What happens at one time influences the probability of something happening at a later time. This is the origin of what we call past, present, and future: *** each are moments of happenings, of now-events, that occur across a space-time block of experience. *** We connect these moments in the body with memory systems, consisting of connections in networks involved in implicit encoding, storage, and retrieval, which take the form of somatic sensation, perception, emotion, and behaviors.

Dear Fishinwater, thank you so much for your interesting contribution!

Attempting to add in my understanding which may be way offline as I'm no subject expert. If the time is split into moments, each moment a fraction of a second or even millisecond/nanosecond/any scale, there is always something happening in this moment, and it takes an observer to be aware of it to actually manifest it in the human memory. Whatever is happening during that moment depends on the observer to register it. Most often people are not aware of things happening and therefore have no memory associated even though other observer/recording might have captured the moment. But still all these events or moments have cause-effect connections to events at a later time. Not sure if this helps, just my 2cents.

I'll take your word for it :-)

dear Phil, thank you so much!! I must admit it's not a simple text... but, believe me, it does include some interesting ideas!!
philgoddard May 30, 2023:
Yes. You have my sympathy - this text is only semi-comprehensible.

Dear Ice Scream, thank you for your contribution! Actually, I find it difficult to understand especially the expression "now-events" in relation to memory: events happening in this moment, perhaps?
Christopher Schröder May 30, 2023:
I would say it means exactly what it means literally

events happening in the NOW moment

agree with Ice Scream
events happening in the NOW= happening at THIS moment in time which, of course, is only transitory.
"Now" becomes "past" as soon as it happens, in the blink of an eye. Likewise, something that happens NOW can also be linked to a "now" moment in the future. However, though we can look back or forward, everything actually happens in the NOW moment.

Yes, you could find some insight in the work by Tolle recommended by Jens Burgert (and I believe it has been translated into italian as well)

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Power_of_Now

"In the normal, mind-identified or unenlightened state of consciousness, the power and creative potential that lie concealed in the Now are completely obscured by psychological time. You cannot find yourself by going into the past. You can find yourself by coming into the present. Life is now. There was never a time when your life was not now, nor will there ever be."
is similar to
"past, present, and future: each are moments of happenings, of now-events, that occur across a space-time block of experience.

Glad to have helped
English MONOlingual means just that. It is the common language for everyone participating in THIS forum so really needs to be the only language used. Otherwise it is just a mess
Just like when you ask in the Italian English forum.we can assume anyone participating understands those 2 so discussion is limited to them

Thank you so much, Yvonne!! Although I can speak a little German, too, it's much clearer now thanks to your contribution!

Augenblicke, Ereignisse in der Gegenwart

It refers to that there is always only the "Now". When you think about future moments it is only a thought but everything until then happens in the Now. Every thinking about the past is just thinking but when each of these moments happened, it happened in the "Now". So there is only the "Now". Eckhard Tolle is teaching about it in the book "The power of Now" which is translated in German with "Die Kraft der Gegenwart", which is why I would translate now-events, as "Ereignisse in der Gegenwart", and "moments of happenings" just as "Augenblicke" because that's what it is. It all happens in the Now --> "im Augenblick".

actions, deeds or events that take place transiently

It's about events or things that happen which can have an effect which causes or influences a future event or happening. Transient is an adjective which describes something which passes by quickly and briefly. It also describes an action or an event which affects something else or it produces results beyond itself. An action can be transient when it causes or influences something else to take place.
Also it's about memories and actions, events or deeds which are stored in the memory, and connections which are formed in a memory system, possibly by which the release of one memory connects with another stored memory and brings it to the forefront of memory recollection.
