From an 1869 record issued by the Rabbi's office in Bauska, Latvia:
"Auf geziemendes Ansuchen wird desmittelst von Seitens des Bauskeschen Rabbineramts die Wahrheitsgemäß attestiert, daß die Eheschliessung des hiesigen Ephraim M. Wulfsohn mit seiner Ehefrau Gitte, geborene Wulf, Wulfsohn, am 26ten Maerz 1856 geschehen ist, und zugleich eine Illatenverschreibung über Summa von 900 SR. schreibe Neunhundert Rubel Silber, welches benannter Ephraim an seine Ehefrau Gitte mittels zwei Zeugen nemlich Leibe Itzig Judelowitz und Nachum Tobjaschewitz ... ausgefertigt hat. solches in dem förmlichen Matrikbuche unter No. 17 verzeichnet worden sey."
In other records issued around the same time, some refer to the "Illatenverschreibung" and others refer to a "Morgengab" or sometimes "Ketuba" in Hebrew. Are these all the same thing? I haven't been able to find the word "Illatenverschreibung" anywhere...

I'd be wary of using Morgengab and Ketub(b)ah (a Jewish contract of marriage) interchangeably as 'one size doesn't fit all': 'Auch will ich dir die Morgengabe deiner Jungfräulichkeit geben, 200 Sus (Denare) in Silbermünzen, die dir gemäß der Tora gebühren, wie auch deine Speise, deine Kleidung und all deinen Bedarf, und ich komme zu dir nach der Weise der ganzen Welt.'
It has, to me, the (unromantic) trappings of a promissory note or a 'bill of sale' - though the US vs. UK differences between the latter term need (to) be watched: operates as a receipt absolute in the USA and a chattel mortgage in E&W: not so far-fetched in a bygone (?) era where a 'chained' (agunot) wife had been considered a husband's 'chattel'.

Maybe he had no means for a Morgengabe or wanted to protect the money from claims of third parties. : "Das Vermögen des Ehemanns ist in der Regel in der Höhe des Morgengabeanspruchs vor anderweitigen Ansprüchen der Gläubiger geschützt. Dies bedeutet in der Praxis, dass durch die Vereinbarung einer hohen Morgengabe für die Frau der Mann sein Vermögen vor Pfändung in einem Insolvenzverfahren durch Dritte schützen kann."
