German term

Kanzleiwesen

German to English Other Law (general)
My foot's on the hose (sic) apparently and I can't think of the term I need for this.

Ein Werk das die grundlegenden Fragen der Rechtspraxis und Rechtsprechung, des Kanzleiwesens und der Rechtsinstitutionen abhandelt.

Wolfgang HULLMANN Feb 9, 2023:
@Craig Meulen First of all, we would have to clarify what a "Kanzlei" was in 13th - 16th century Asia. Even in German, its meaning may vary in relation to its whereabouts: Gerichtskanzlei, Anwaltskanzlei. Perhaps it meant something else in another era, on another continent? Perhaps it was located at the king's court and populated by functionaries, officers, perhaps even army-related staff. I have to admit that I don't know. Perhaps you could tell us more? A translation will depend on what its real task was at that time.

As to "-wesen", here's what the Duden says: "bezeichnet in Bildungen mit Substantiven einen Bereich, eine Gesamtheit, die etwas in seiner Vielfalt umfasst
BEISPIEL
Bildungs-, Finanz-, Gesundheits-, Hochschulwesen".
No particular translation in English: education, finance, health, universities. Sometimes you might add "sector" or something similar.

system of law practices? just guessing...
philgoddard Jan 26, 2023:
I altered it to Law because that's what it's about, even with your additional context. In my experience, people categorise questions as Social Science or Linguistics when they don't know where to put them.
Craig Meulen (asker) Jan 26, 2023:
History, not law as such Sorry, something went haywire when I entered this term - haven't been here for a while. And I should have offered some more context - we're talking about an academic work covering the history of the legal systems in Asia in the 13th to 16th centuries. So 'law firm' is obviously wrong but you weren't to know that. Somehow this post got altered to appear in the legal section, but I entered it as 'Social sciences'.
Craig Meulen (asker) Jan 26, 2023:
German to English - Sorry if that isn't clear.

Phil's Langenscheidt reference doesn't take account of the -wesen suffix.
The full context is "grundlegende Fragen ... des Kanzleiwesens" = fundamental issues of law firm management...

Thanks, but I hadn't put in the right context - see discussion above.
Thanks, chancery is indeed the term - my apologies for a badly posted question.

With the additional context (see the discussion box), I'm changing my answer to "chancery".

Some confusion arose due to your changes as a moderator, I'm afraid. And I've added more context now.
Thanks, my apologies for my inexpert posting of the question.

chancery (chancellery) system

A chancery or chancellery (Latin: cancellaria) is a medieval writing office, responsible for the production of official documents.[1] The title of chancellor, for the head of the office, came to be held by important ministers in a number of states, and remains the title of the heads of government in modern Germany and Austria. Chancery hand is a term for various types of handwriting associated with chanceries.
