después de leer el texto original íntegro, se comprende bien que se refiere a elegir, nombrar o proponer candidatos del partido para presentarse a las elecciones (del estado de Georgia en particular)
hay un juego, que no sé si se puede calificar de desacertado, pero sin duda resulta llamativo o incluso paradójico, en el que se mezclan los conceptos "republicano" y "reyes"
la alusión a "reyes" y "coronar" puede funcionar como símil de poder local en una república como Costa Rica o Estados Unidos (si bien, si se me permite, pienso que el texto original quedaría más preciso con un "reyezuelos" acompañado de "conquistar feudos locales" que, aunque sería una recreación que puede ser tildada de poco parcial o rigurosa, puede transmitir con más claridad el mensaje que recurrir a conceptos solemnes que tal vez llegan a confundir al lector)

creo que adaptar y llamar a las cosas por su nombre sin metáforas es más claro, toda vez que el artículo se refiere a un estado y sus potenciales cargos electos
