German term

Raupenfahrzeug

German to English Tech/Engineering Automotive / Cars & Trucks
https://www.chaeserstatt.ch/anreise.html

Scroll down to "Anreise im Winter" to see a picture of what I'm talking about. What is one of these called? I've image searched 'crawler vehicle', 'caterpillar vehicle', 'crawler tractor' and 'tracked vehicle', but none of them looks quite the same as this.

I'm pretty much a novice when it comes to this type of thing, so any and all help will be appreciated!

Detective work Are we really supposed to do the detective / forensic work speculating about the type of the vehicle involved based on a poor quality photo and checking other websites, blogs, travelogues etc. when the simplest solution would be to just pick a phone and call the client?

Nick If you scroll down the following page, you'll find a front-side photo of this kind of Raupenfahrzeug owned by the hotel: https://travelvivi.ch/2020/02/chaeserstatt-1777m/

In fact, take a very close look at the image you linked; I think it's probably the same vehicle, though the triangular tracks are hard to make out.

Someone posted a similar photo on tripadvisor, so I think it's safe to say that this is neither a half-track nor a continuous track but a four-track(ed) vehicle. An ENS example:
"The 13-passenger, fully enclosed, heated, four-track vehicle climbs to an elevation of 12,500 feet with panoramic 360 degree vistas."

Writing a blog post about Chäserstatt. a US native who lives in Switzerland (at least, according to what I've found) called them snow cats (see second para.):
https://www.musikdorf.ch/en/blog/clean-lines,-good-light-51

A bigger vehicle like this could be called a snow coach. As there are also snowcat conversion kits etc. (https://custom-trucks-for-sale.com/2005-custom-dodge-2500-cu... ), I don't think there's a widely used name for this.

Best wishes

half-track possibly Why not check the type of the vehicle with someone at the Berghotel Chäserstatt for whom you are obviously translating this website.
If the vehicle has regular wheels at the front, it is a half-track vehicle. If not, then go to my suggestions.

I just trust it is not a half-track vehicle because the picture shows only the rear view.

caterpillar (transport) vehicle

You might have been thrown off track by the Caterpillar company that is all over Google. Try startpage, look around, and you'll find sites like this one

The Caterpillar company is apparently focusing on utility vehicles, which makes it a bit confusing.

Please keep in mind that a caterpillar vehicle is not necessarily one produced by Caterpillar, Inc. - even though they are trying hard to create that impression.

neutral petrolhead : the reference is a Russian website, so I would not trust it unreservedly // Caterpillar does not build utility vehicles - it builds construction equipment (including large haulers or dump trucks, not 'utility' vehicles) first and foremost.

half-track

The thing in the picture looks like a half-track, although you can't see the front.
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Half-track

That said, it's a marketing website rather than a technical document, so you could try translating it more loosely: "snow tractor" sprang to mind, although most search hits for that show ordinary tractors rather than crawlers.

neutral petrolhead : The unique attribute of a half-track is the front end of the vehicle. We are unable to see the front end on the picture therefore one should not speculate.

If you cannot find out the type, manufacturer and year of manufacture of this tracked vehicle, you should stick with the general term. It is also possible that it is no longer in its original condition and has been converted into a caterpillar vehicle.
