Una vez allí, y cuando Nico salta a la roca para percebar aparece un extraño sonido, como un un aleteo, que empieza a sonar en la cabeza de Nico y la hace detenerse.

Portuguese? Since the word is italicized, I wonder if it's from Portuguese or another Iberian language. In Portuguese, it would mean 'to see better'. I'm posting that answer as a possibility.
