The question has been asked and 'answered' before on ProZ, it is true, but a fresh angle might be useful.
Urgent applications used to be heard in E&W by Masters (now Judge) in Chambers, such translation decried by AT about a decade ago for the title of 'master (or 'mistress') and not necessarily heard in chambers, but inter partes in open court.
Note that, in E&W and Canada, applications for an interim or interlocutory (doesn't mean 'spoken') are heard in Court on a 'Motions Day'. Yes, contrary to a ProZ myth, the term of art of motion is used in the UK as well as the USA and Canada.

Hi Phil. Thanks for your help. I did check the glossaries and saw the very question - and the final answer didn't seem that obvious to me! (and still doesn't) |
None of my research in English led me to believe that "Judge in chambers" had any relevance and I couldn't find other information to support making a choice, so sometimes it is definitely worth asking again and not just picking up previous answers. Thanks |

: Judges can sit in chambers in other types of cases and not all "référés" are treated as urgent

My point was that we've had this several times before, with perfectly good answers. "Interim" was another of the several suggestions - the idea is a judge who makes orders without a full hearing.
