philgoddard Feb 8, 2022:
You left out "et" It makes a whole lot more sense now. "Litigation and guardianship judge" seems the obvious translation.
AllegroTrans Feb 8, 2022:
This judge has a truly mixed bag of jurisdiction and it's impossible to find an English equivalent. I think the best solution would be to use the term in French with an explanation in brackets along the lines of Adrian's suggestion
Julie Barber (asker) Feb 8, 2022:
I must confess that in my text is it written as "LE JUGE DES CONTENTIEUX ET DE LA PROTECTION DU TRIBUNAL JUDICIAIRE OF XX [town]".I wrote it differently on my question as that was the only format that I could find online with good references. I see from a previous question by Allegro and answered by Adrian that the Tribunal Judiciare is a form of "combined court". But I am going to make use of their potential error to write something like "Litigation and Guardianship Judge". The claim is actually beyond 5K (threshold given in refs below).
philgoddard Feb 7, 2022:
Additional context from my deleted answer Julie said: "It's a commercial case involving construction works and defects, and a company trying to recuperate losses."

Proposed translations

4 hrs

approx. Associate Commercial (and Vulnerable Persons Litigation) Judge

Just vague enough to cover the 'diversified or hybrid relief' vs. fast- or multi-track angle.

AT's ref. suggests a 'small claims' angle: 'Avant le procès, un règlement amiable du litige doit être tenté pour les litiges jusqu'à 5 000 €.'

Cut to County Court / District Judges (previously known as 'Registrars') in E&W.

Protection dispute judge

This is so particular that any attempt to equate it with the remit of an American or British judge is bound to fail.
If the translation is followed by an explanation, then the reader will understand, If not, then you may have to add in translator notes
A literal translation has the merits of reminding the reader that this is the French legal system which does not always correspond to an Anglo-Saxon one.

a dispute resolution judge

The dispute resolution Judge is a magistrate attached to the Judiciary Tribunal, whose role is to judge certain issues or cases connected to vulnerable people, such as debt cases or tenancy and rental cases. There's a new rule created by justice reform in the event of a combination of an instance tribunal with a larger instance tribunal. Each stage of the judiciary process has at least one Judge.

Il y a un règlement nouveau composé des réformations de la justice aux cas des combinations d'un tribunal de l'instance primière avec un tribunal d'une instance plus grande. Chaque étape du procès judiciare a un juge au moins.

"A Judge is a public official vested with the authority to hear, determine and preside over legal matters brought to a Court of Law. In jury cases the Judge presides over the panel and instructs it concerning pertinent law. The Judge also may rule on motions made before or during a trial. In countries with a civil law tradition, a more active role customarily has been assigned to a Judge than in countries with a common law tradition. In civil law courts the procedure is inquisitorial while in common law courts the system is adversarial with the questioning of witnesses and the presentation of evidence."
One can read that the roles and expectations of Judges vary depending on the system of law which presides in the relevant country or district authority.

Juge des Contentieux de la Protection (in italics)

No even approximate UK English equivalent, and certainly not a short one.

So, since the role is defined in a little detail just below, leave the French in French but put it in italics.
Not everything can be translated succinctly, for cultural reasons.

Julie, do you need a translation for later in your text, if the term crops up again?

agree philgoddard : I assumed this was about guardianship, but they seem to have a strange ragbag of responsibilities, and I can't see what these have in common. You could just say "protective litigation judge", but that's a bit of a copout.
