establishment's anointee

Homework / test English to German Other Government / Politics
This text was published in "The Economist". It's about the American presidential elections, primaries, etc...
"The frontloaded timetable was designed by Democratic bigwigs to benefit one of their own - a senator, say, like John Kerry, John Edwards or Joe Lieberman, or Congressman Dick Gephardt, the party's former leader in the House. The idea was to give the establishment's anointee more time to raise money and heal wounds before taking on the 800-pound gorilla, George Bush.

The "establishment"'s favo(u)red candidate

In times of yore, leaders were anointed with oil (so the Bible tells us) before their time came to be chosen as leader. After anointment, however, this was in those days a foregone conclusion. Nowadays, this is a slightly flippant reference to a candidate whom the establishment (those who wield the real power in the world) expects to represent their interests.
