English term

draw blade

English to Spanish Tech/Engineering Materials (Plastics, Ceramics, etc.) Wood machining
¡Hola!

The optimum thickness of a draw blade is 0.2 mm.
A draw blade set too low can damage the surface.
A too thick draw blade chip can lead to "chatter marks" and/or stress whitening.

Gracias por adelantado.

@All @Alejandro
Thank you for your endorsement of my earlier comments. You’re right – the correct translation in this context cannot be argallera.

@Daniel
‘draw’ in ‘draw blade’ is easy enough to translate in the context of a manual tool, because it refers to the fact that the tool is pulled (drawn) towards the user rather than being pushed away like most other cutting tools (cinceles, cepillas, serruchos, etc.). In the context of a machine tool, however, the idea of direction towards/away from the operator is meaningless.
As a general rule, however, it is not good translation practice to use a generic term where the ST has referred to something much more specific. The problem here is that ‘draw blade’ is almost certainly not the correct term in English.

@Nadia
It looks as though your ST author either is not a native English speaker, or knows little about machine tools – or both.
I suggest you seek clarification from your client.

Hi Jennifer,
Thanks for your comments. I think the ST was not written by a native speaker. And it refers to industrial machines, not hand tools.
Jennifer Levey Jan 8, 2022:
@Asker Also, can you confirm that the ST is of native English origin – or is it a translation from some other language?
I ask, because the extract from ST doesn’t make sense.
For example, it is very unlikely that the “optimum thickness” of any blade used on wood (even very soft woods such as balsa) – whether in a manual tool or any machine – would have a blade only “0.2 mm” thick. A typical thickness would be at least 10 times greater (see https://www.fine-tools.com/zug.html ).

I therefore wonder if the first sentence of the ST extract should read:
“The optimum protrusion of a draw blade is 0.2 mm”.
This would then lead logically to the next sentence, because “A draw blade set too low …” refers to a problem where a blade that protrudes too far below the sole-plate of the tool, causing the wood shavings to be too thick and too stiff, so they will not ‘scroll’ off the surface cleanly. With most types of timber, a protrusion of 0.2 mm will give thin flexible shavings.
The third sentence expands on that statement, referring to “chips” which are chunks of wood that break off the surface, rather than flexible shavings, and the consequent irregularities in the finished surface.
Jennifer Levey Jan 8, 2022:
@Asker Please confirm whether this refers to hand tools as used by traditional carpenters, wainwrights, coopers and other craftsmen, or to modern industrial machines.

Referencias:
https://es.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hoja_(cuchillo)
https://es.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cuchilla_(herramienta)

https://es.wikipedia.org/wiki/Guillame

argallera

A draw blade is also known as a drawknife, and has a similar form and purpose to a spokeshave.

Compare:
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Drawknife
vs.
https://es.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bastren

and
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Spokeshave
vs.
https://es.wikipedia.org/wiki/Argallera

The ST mentions "A draw blade set too low can damage the surface" - and that implies the blade position is adjustable. Adjustable blade protrusion is a feature of a spokeshave, but not a draw blade, so I suspect the author has confused these tools and is in fact referring to a spokeshave / argallera.

'chatter marks', also mentioned in the ST, are a typical problem caused by improper use of a spokeshave / argallera.
