In notes describing interactive activities for visitors to an art exhibition about colour. Context: " Manipe : des manipulations interactives, essentiellement « low-tech », pour expérimenter, pour comprendre, pour se laisser surprendre.
Manipe sensorielle : des expériences qui font appel, au-delà de la vision, au toucher, à l’ouïe ou à l’odorat pour explorer les effets sensoriels de la couleur et les liens entre les sens.
Manipe – jeu - quizz : des manipes-jeux sous forme de quizz ou sondage pour une approche active des notions et pour interroger les visiteurs sur leurs goûts ou leurs pratiques.
"Manip" in English usually means a photo manipulation, although I can't think of an alternative for this context. "Manipulation" seems ok in English, but is there a better alternative? Thanks for any help.

: For me, interactive first implies more than one person participating and secondly the idea that there has to be active reaction on BOTH sides, even if one is an instalation. Simply manipulating an object, for example, would seem to fall short.

Good morning. From my own experience in painting, I propose another approach to this sense of manipulation that might be helpful to you when looking at this art exhibition example. You might also call it 'practical work'. Just because the term ''manipulation'' mainly means ''handle, experiment''.
Example sentence:
Les élèves suivent les manipulations du professeur de chimie.
The students follow the chemistry professor's experiment.

- "manipe jeu quizz [sic]" --> "games and quiz activities". Again, plural in reality.

Agree with David Vaughn it's about various "hands on activities".
I did say "in general"
The thing with the question is that we have "manipulations interactives pour expérimenter, pour comprendre, pour se laisser surprendre" and "jeu - quizz" and from the first word to the last one, we are getting further and further away from the more limited meaning of "experiment".
"Interactive activity" covers all of this far more safely IMHO. I'm not saying that "experiment" is never used but would we use it for a quiz???
I know this group can be hard on those that answer but I didn't hand out a disagree or anything.

Not "experiments" in general for painting, This would be more for a science exhibition IMHO
