It could also be an undermount sink, where the sink is installed under the countertop, instead of the sink being installed into the counter opening from the top with the rim of the sink resting on the counter, it is installed from below with the rim of the opening hanging over slightly, for easier cleaning. At Kohlers and American Standard and many others it's called:
undercounter lavatory or undercounter sink
I wonder if this is a british/american thing?

inset sink
An **inset sink** is installed as part of a continuous work surface. The aperture is cut out once its position is decided. You must make sure there is sufficient space provided underneath for the bowl to sit and the pipes to be plumbed in.
