French term

le retour

Non-PRO French to English Other General / Conversation / Greetings / Letters Психоанализ/Psychology
Salut!

When entering new questions, KudoZ askers are given an opportunity* to classify the difficulty of their questions as 'easy' or 'pro'. If you feel a question marked 'easy' should actually be marked 'pro', and if you have earned more than 20 KudoZ points, you can click the "Vote PRO" button to recommend that change.

How to tell the difference between "easy" and "pro" questions:

An easy question is one that any bilingual person would be able to answer correctly. (Or in the case of monolingual questions, an easy question is one that any native speaker of the language would be able to answer correctly.)

A pro question is anything else... in other words, any question that requires knowledge or skills that are specialized (even slightly).

Another way to think of the difficulty levels is this: an easy question is one that deals with everyday conversation. A pro question is anything else.

When deciding between easy and pro, err on the side of pro. Most questions will be pro.

* Note: non-member askers are not given the option of entering 'pro' questions; the only way for their questions to be classified as 'pro' is for a ProZ.com member or members to re-classify it.

and if it simply meant a return to puritan attitudes towards sexuality - that would seem to make sense but, without more context, hard to be sure

the return (of puritanism)

it means quite simply that puritanism is on the rise again and that there is a reaction AGAINST (over)sexuality

agree writeaway : Yes, return is a very standard translation of retour

Thanks:-)
neutral Daryo : roughly yes, but there is nothing to indicate that it must be about the present times. This ST coud well be part of some historical recapitulation.

Not at all "roughly": = your "best answer" (Dbox): Have you never heard of an historical present? (IF that's what's required here)

puritan attitude against sexuality

le puritanisme se retourne contre la sexualité
Peer comment(s):

neutral philgoddard : I don't understand this, but I wonder if you could be confusing "retour" and "se retourne", meaning " is a reaction against".
2 hrs
Nope it is a puritan attitude against sexuality
disagree AllegroTrans : Asker wanted translation of "retour" (in context)

Certainly no reason for a disagree.
disagree Daryo : agree with AllegroTrans // in my limited views, "translating" a term means translating that term, not just picking and choosing to translate instead any related term you fancy // Wrong kind of "creativity" ...

the resurgence

...the resurgence of puritanism

As Yvonne says, "on the rise again" so "resurgence" seems a goofd term here
