French term

meulage

French to English Tech/Engineering Manufacturing description of CNC machines for the watch making and medical industries
The document is on Google ranking, which I think is a clue ...
I have "meulage" and "rectification" several times in the document, either separately or, as here, together:

Machine CNC de terminaison/finition multifonction à 6 axes, dont 5 axes simultanés destinée au meulage/rectification et satinage.

Clearly I can't say "grinding/grinding". Any suggestions?

By the way, for "terminaison/finition" I'm just going to say "finishing". Maybe just saying "grinding" will do?

claude-andrew (asker) Oct 29, 2021:
Client Client says use "grinding" for both terms, and obviously just once when both terms are used together.
claude-andrew (asker) Oct 28, 2021:
Alas, milling is also included in the list of terms
Althea Draper Oct 28, 2021:
From a paper on different methods of grinding gears which also gives examples of 'meulage' and 'rectification'

Andrew Paul Kennett Oct 28, 2021:
Milling. Claude-Andrew,
Or grinding/rectification? These would be two different operations. Grinding to diminish a surface and rectification to alleviate any faults.
claude-andrew (asker) Oct 28, 2021:
Alas, finishing and polishing are also included in the list of terms.
Andrew Paul Kennett Oct 28, 2021:
Polishing. Liz Askew, in your reply you gave polishing, which in the case of terminating a piece is appropriate.
This could also be: Multi-functional CNC finishing machine.
in either case finishing and polishing would be appropriate as they relate to the end product and not one in the course of fabrication.

The solution I've used in the past is 'precision grinding' for 'rectification' vs. just plain 'grinding' for meulage — there is a difference that it's important to retain.
Note from asker:
Thanks Tony, that seems to be the solution. I also thought that rectification could apply to flat or other non-wheel grinding, whereas meulage of course is with a wheel.

4 KudoZ points awarded for this answer. Comment: "Thanks Tony. The client having asked for "grinding" both times, I've edited the source term to include rectification to reflect the nature of the translation issue."

(rough) grinding

Abrasive machining is a machining process where material is removed from a workpiece using a multitude of small abrasive particles. Common examples include grinding, honing, and polishing.

La rectification d'une pièce mécanique est une opération destinée à améliorer son état de surface.
Les deux techniques principales sont la rectification plane et la rectification cylindrique.

Grinding is a type of abrasive machining process which uses grinding wheel as cutting tool.

Honing is an abrasive machining process that produces a precision surface on a metal workpiece by scrubbing an abrasive grinding stone or grinding wheel against it along a controlled path. Honing is primarily used to improve the geometric form of a surface, but can also improve the surface finish.

Lapping is a machining process in which two surfaces are rubbed together with an abrasive between them, by hand movement or using a machine.
This can take two forms. The first type of lapping (traditionally called grinding), involves rubbing a brittle material such as glass against a surface such as iron or glass itself (also known as the "lap" or grinding tool) with an abrasive such as aluminum oxide, jeweller's rouge, optician's rouge, emery, silicon carbide, diamond, etc., between them.

Polishing is the process of creating a smooth and shiny surface by rubbing it or by applying a chemical treatment, leaving a clean surface with a significant specular reflection (still limited by the index of refraction of the material according to the Fresnel equations).

You will find additional information in each article.

Proposal for the context (for different types of machining processes):

Multi-functional CNC finishing machine with 6 axes, including 5 simultaneous axes for (rough) grinding / fine grinding (honing/lapping/polishing) and satin finishing.
Note from asker:
Thanks for this information Johannes - I hadn't thought of honing and lapping. However, as I mentioned, the client wants "grinding" for both rectification and meulage, so that's what I used (without repetition). The job was urgent and I sent it yesterday. In fact what the client wants is list of key words for the purpose of Google referencing. I'll add honing and lapping to my list of translations.
