Hi David, I saw your comment on wikipedia reference about"extended" to Marco.
So, what about other options hereunder for your french term:

way the instrument makes its sound
(or plural - ways the instruments make their sound)

way the instrument is played (or plural ways the instruments are played)

It seems to me, except mistake, that the "issue" with traditional and avant-garde techniques are all included.(/b)

Kindly let me know your opinion.

Hallo David, thank you for the points - glad to help you as well as not being on a wrong "translation track". Have a nice week-end. :-)
Note from asker:
Thanks Grace. I will certainly be approaching the translation as you have noted, both using "extended" as well as other descriptions. Possibly "extended and traditional [playing] techniques". In my text I get to talk about this several times, and I don't need to do word-for-word. Just get the idea across. If there were a term that was used just to refer to multiple execution techniques for classical music, that would likely tacitly include extended techniques as well in much of my context. But I haven't been able to think of a "term" that specifically labels that. Perhaps descriptive is as close as it comes.

Note from asker:
The wikipedia reference would refer to "extended" playing techniques. However my author is not talking about ONLY new techniques, but the entire range of traditional techniques like pizzicato and normal bowing as well. The example of an avant-garde technique I gave dates to the 1600s.
Peer comments on this reference comment:

agree Conor McAuley : Looks like 1) this is a very specific term, peculiar to contemporary classical music; 2) the French term is used in English. / Marco should post "modes de jeu". Gloss in English with the definition from Wiki or simply with "musical techniques".
