дизайн и ръчен труд
I could not find the exact content of this school subject in the 80's. However, it still exists today, or at least up until 2014: https://www.theguardian.com/artanddesign/2014/feb/11/design-...
I would leave "design" as "дизайн" and translate "craft" as "ръчен труд", as it is the common name for that subject in Bulgaria, in which you make items with your hands. Although in Bulgaria this subject is usually part of the primary education curriculum, I still find this option good, as the term is commonly used.
