Arabic term

مأذون

Arabic to English Art/Literary Poetry & Literature
Hi everyone,

This is a Libyan short story I'm working with. I thought the word means the person who officiates a marriage, but I don't understand how they are one of the حكماء البلدة.

....إلا أن حكماء البلدة - وهم إمام الجامع، المأذون ورئيس الشرطة

Thanks for your help!

Marriage officer

I think the writer doesn't differentiate between the roles of a marriage officer, an Imam and so on.
