German term

lastabhängigen Stromtarifen

German to English Bus/Financial Energy / Power Generation electricity rate system

Discussion

Johannes Gleim Jul 22, 2021:
@ Michael I am wondering, why 'usage-based' corresponds to 'lastabhängig' Can you please still add relevant references for comprehension? I understand that the tariff considers the workload, utilization or energy of the grid in kW or kWh, rather than the usage.

agree Gordon Matthews : Also a good translation, although it may not be readily understood by lay people.

load-based prices

Thanks for this one. Important to make the distinction I think between load (supply, overall demand) and consumption (or individual household if you will consumption).

Looks like it might have been intended to relate to consumption, but came out as more supply oriented. Could also be a combination of the two, but given the context, I think it relates more to people saving electricity cost by storing electricity in their car batteries that they can later use when tariffs are high (either because of their individual consumption patterns or generally high demand or a combination of the two).

Could also be referring to a future scenario or which may already exist in some places, where the electricity tariffs change in real time as load/supply/demand changes.

Peer comment(s):

neutral Gordon Matthews : There are already electricity suppliers in many places that have different tariffs for peak and off-peak electricity.

Thank you so much for your feedback.
agree Julia Burgess : Agree with your explanation - all to do with managing the load on the grid and making it more attractive for individuals to draw down power at certain times (when availability is high) - which then translates into the idea of off-peak pricing.

Thanks for the feedback !! Yeah exactly that, pretty cool idea actually.

variable energy rates (e.g. Variable or Peak Pricing, VPP/CPP)

Einführung von lastvariablen und zeitvariablen Tarifen
:

From 2011, energy suppliers also have to provide time and volume-variable tariffs to the customers and to generate monthly billing data if requested.

With a variable-rate plan, the price you pay per kilowatt-hour for electricity may be determined by the market or other factors considered by the retail energy supplier. Since the market cost of electricity changes frequently, your rates could too.
https://www.constellation.com/energy-101/fixed-vs-variable-e...

Potentially, variable electricity rates could also be an effective tool to incentivize residential customers to shift electricity consumption according to the current grid state.
:
The participants show strong interest in variable electricity rates, particularly rates with three price levels and a price spread around 30ct/kWh, but want to be informed about the electricity price schedule at least one day before.

Variable-rate tariffs (also called variable price plans) do exactly what their name suggests – they vary. Or, more precisely, the cost per unit of energy (kWh) varies.
But they don’t go up and down randomly – they “track” wholesale energy prices. So if wholesale prices rise or fall, your variable energy rates may change too.

What’s the better deal: fixed or variable energy rates?
First, let’s take a step back and consider the fundamental debate of fixed versus variable power rates.
:
Since the power distribution grid does such a good job of sending electricity long distances, variable rates are often a question of who is producing that power at the moment to keep up with your demand.
https://www.libertypowercorp.com/blog/the-benefits-of-fixed-...

In simple terms, variable rates and dynamic pricing are designed to reflect the actual cost of electricity during specific hours of the day and year, to change customers’ hourly load shapes with reductions in peak demand or shifts of peak usage to other hours of the day.

Recently, there has been a sharp uptick in the number of utilities that are proposing to recover more of their costs through monthly fixed charges rather than through variable rates (which are based on usage)
:
Volumetric Rate: A rate or charge for a commodity or service calculated on the basis of the amount or volume actually received by the customer (e.g., cents/kWh, or cents/kW). May also be referred to as the “variable rate.” If referring to cents per kilowatt‐hour, it is often referred to as the “energy charge.”
https://www.synapse-energy.com/sites/default/files/Caught-in...

f. Critical peak pricing (CPP): This is a dynamic pricing scheme in which prices are high during a few peak hours of the day and discounted during the rest of the day. The peak price remains same for all days. It gives a very strong price signal and enhances the reduction of excessive peak load.
g. Variable peak pricing (VPP)/b>: This is quite similar to CPP with the only difference that the peak prices vary from day to day. The consumers are informed about such peak prices beforehand.
https://link.springer.com/article/10.1057/s41274-016-0149-4

Combinations of static and dynamic signals include variable peak pricing (different periods for pricing defined in advance, but price for on-peak period varies by market conditions), and critical peak pricing

“Critical peak pricing tariff design for mass consumers in Great Britain
:
Critical peak pricing (CPP)” refers to a method of pricing electricity whereby "Time of Use (TOU)Pricing" is in effect with the exception of certain "peak periods" at which time electric prices may reflect the costs of generating and/or purchasing electricity at the wholesale level[1]. It aims to reduce load during the relatively few, very expensive hours more dynamically.
