In the course of consideration

English Other Other
After careful consideration and discussion, we have decided to cancel the 2021 workshop. With the ongoing global pandemic of COVID-19, our decision was reached with great regret.
**In the course of consideration**, we have given top priority to taking precautionary measures against the COVID-19 infection for the health of our high school students. Thank you for your understanding.

Can "In the consider of consideration" be replaced with "Instead"? Or which is better?

Thank you!

@ Asker Could you please explain why you thought "instead" could work?
Firstly lots of ways of rephrasing this to avoid repetition and make it more concise
e.g. in the course of consideration= during our deliberations
OR the whole thing:

"After much discussion and careful consideration, we have decided to cancel the 2021 workshop in the interests of safeguarding the health of high school students during the ongoing COVID-19 global pandemic. We think it best to prioritize (OR give top priority to) precautionary measures against the virus/infection. This decision was reached with great regret. Thank you for your understanding.

Thank you, Tina I think your suggestion is very good. Thank you very much!
Tina Vonhof (X) Jun 21, 2021:
"Instead" does not really fit because what follows is not in contrast to what went before. You could say: "In our discussions, we have given top priority...." or you could leave it out altogether and start with: "We have given top priority...." No solution is completely satisfactory because that paragraph is poorly worded and ideally should be condensed as follows: "After careful consideration and discussion, we have decided to cancel the 2021 workshop. We regret this decision but we have given top priority to taking precautionary measures against the COVID-19 infection for the health of our high school students. Thank you for your understanding." Maybe you could make this suggestion to your client.

In weighing our decision

another way of saying it - short and to the point.

In weighing our decision, we have given top priority to taking precautionary measures against the COVID-19 infection for the health of our high school students.

IOW: we have given greater weight / importance to "taking precautionary measures against the COVID-19 infection" than to keeping this "2021 workshop" alive / as an ongoing activity.

There is also a "collateral benefit": no repetition of "consider / considering / consideration" - nothing wrong in avoiding repetitions when it can done without twisting the meaning of the sentence.

while considering

NO. Why repleace with instead? would be completely wrong.

In the course of consideration= while (during the time) they were considering (or looking at) this...
that's all it means and is fine as it is.
Peer comment(s):

neutral philgoddard : I think "instead" might well be better, though we don't know what the Japanese says. "While considering" needs an object, and is a partial repetition of "consideration" in the previous sentence.

The meaning of "in the course of consideration" is "while considering". It doesn't mean "instead" though, of course, the Japanese may say that. I'm going on the question as asked
agree Daryo : while considering this issue/matter/question or while examining this ././. or in/while debating about this matter etc etc // can't see how "instead" could make any sense in this story.

Thanks. Lots of synonyms but "instead" is not one of them here
agree David Hollywood : impossible to know without the original concept but ok
