Discussion

Charlesp (asker) Jun 23, 2021:
Thanks everyone, especially Deane for all the detailed contributions and information. And all the effort that went into this.
As for grading, that's difficult - I'd give 4 points to all 5!
Tomasso Jun 21, 2021:
inagomark, utmark???

(((näga or inägomark is a part of an agricultural property which is adjacent to the farm itself and which to a significant part consists of a field, meadow, plot or garden. [1] The opposite is outfield.)))

Two cents, in Kuna, we would say unused land, wast land. Amerikas förenta stater (seems to be in agreement with the first answer, outlying fiels)
Deane Goltermann Jun 20, 2021:
'the opposite' Utmark(er) and 'utägor' are both described as motsats till inägor, yet these two terms are slightly different depending on what era you are in. Is your context now or before the mid/late 1800s?
I also se the NE definition that says inägor is a"samlingsbenämning på skogsmark och impediment (obrukbar mark) i motsats till inäga, dvs. åker, trädgård, tomtmark och äng." So they include meadows and fields in 'inägor.'

Thank you
neutral Deane Goltermann : 'Outlying' certainly fits, but the Swe term includes land that is forested, and owned land that is otherwise unproductive.

4 KudoZ points awarded for this answer. Comment: "unfenced land, includes land that is forested, and owned land that is otherwise unproductive. Depends upon context."

unfenced, unenclosed, unfarmed

fenced v unfenced, enclosed v unenclosed; farmed v unfarmed (last suggestion based on a dictionary definition rather than your explanation)
Note from asker:
excellent - thanks for all the details. Seems that it depends upon the context, i.e. what the land is used for, and there is no general term. Thanks

Oops. I don't k,now who was first but it doesn't matter. The thing is the negative adjective is decided by what the asker deckides to use in the positive.

unfenced land

However, where I live, in the North Pennines of Northern England, such land is called allotments. Not to be confused with the plots where enthusiastic gardeners grow their prize vegetables.

thanks!
