Z-axis? Could possibly be a third axis in a machine in this case the Z-axis. If there are references to X and Y in the text it is probably so.

I agree with Agneta. Z is a variable/value for something, and someone probably forgot to introduce the value, or the value is not even relevant at all. I don't think there is any point to search for a deeper meaning of that. Just leave Z, I would say.

Place holder Could it possibly be that Z is used as a place holder for something that was meant to be put in later - e.g. after checking something. And then the originator of the document failed to go through it to find the Z-s.
