يمطّ شفتيه

Arabic to English Art/Literary Poetry & Literature
قال وهو يمطّ شفتيه: بالله عليك، هل يختلفُ ذيله عن ذيول الحمير؟ وما هو شكل أذنيه؟ وكيف يمكن العثور عليه وفقًا لهذه المواصفات

Hi everyone,

I'm translating a Palestinian young adult novel. In this section, the narrator is suggesting to his friend, who has lost his donkey, to put an ad in the local paper describing the donkey, in case anyone has seen it. The friend doesn't seem keen on the idea.

I'm wondering what the significance of this phrase is: is it meant to imply that his friend is annoyed, or angry? Is it similar to the English phrase "pressed his lips together", used to convey disapproval?

Many thanks!

Many thanks! It is definitely correct. I was only suggesting that there are many possible indications, "curling his lips [sarcastically, foolishly, contemptuously]", and I go for the second one.
Yassine El Bouknify May 26, 2021:
You're right I couldn't find other synonyms of curling one's lip. Hence, I provided it as a translation. I'm not sure whether there are other alternatives in English.
Assem AlKhallouf May 26, 2021:
Thanks, Yassine. I got your point, but it is not clear that "curling his lips" refers to disrespect in the above-provided sample. Apparently, it has many usages in Arabic.
Assem AlKhallouf May 26, 2021:
Usually, it refers to mouthing or ranting (التشدق), too.

curling his lips

"He said while curling his lips."
He asked him rhetorical questions. So, it's highly probable it's a mocking gesture.
