... Since you say your source is German, it may indeed cover both types of PBX... and I don't think English really has a word separating them out either

I would say series system but in this context it seems to refer to a structural layout design of a telephone system, where you put telephone equipment next to each other, in a row, like maybe on a wall for instance.
