Private branch exchange

https://www.telephonecollectors.info/index.php/browse/histor...

"The “Reihenanlage” and the “Parallelanlage” were among the smallest types of private branch exchanges used in Germany and Austria. The Reihenanlage was named so because the CO line(s) were looped through all telephone in series, while the Parallelanlage was named for the fact that the phones were all wired in parallel with the exchange line(s). The distinction between parallel and series types was more common in Austria, while both types were commonly called “series equipment” [=Reihenanlage] in Germany."

... Since you say your source is German, it may indeed cover both types of PBX... and I don't think English really has a word separating them out either

4 KudoZ points awarded for this answer. Comment: "Thanks very much! Your suggestion seems to be the best one available for a context of semi-technical marketing stuff. This was a company history blurb, so that fits."

linear layout

I would say series system but in this context it seems to refer to a structural layout design of a telephone system, where you put telephone equipment next to each other, in a row, like maybe on a wall for instance.

... https://www.elektronik-kompendium.de/sites/kom/1211291.htm for a drawing and a definition of a "Reihenanlage":

Technisches Prinzip: Reihenanlage
