This appears in a historical document about early farming days in New Mexico. The whole sentence reads, "Don Cruz logró 500 zaleas de la trasquila de ese año que pesaban mil libras." I am unsure as to whether this refers to sheepskin for decoration or warmth, or if this refers to sheep wool.

I believe the author means the skins, not just the wool, which is more commonly harvested from sheep. But there are also markets for their skin.

Zalea can be sheepskin, but as shearing is involved here, I think it means the fleece.

: Yep, no need for anything else because if it's not from "la trasquila" then, as you say, they're sheepskins. Seems you were fleeced out of the points here ("...from crops and shears"??).

: I think this is the likely option: https://es.wikipedia.org/wiki/Zalea_(cuero) and Sheepskin https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sheepskin, although I would drop the "s" from fleeces.

So do I! Thank you! Sheepskins are different to fleeces. The former are from dead animals, the latter from live ones! "Fleeces" is correct.

I decided to translate this in my document as "fleece from sheep shearing". I actually meant to choose a different answer here. However, after selecting, I was unable to go back and change my choice.
