French term

datation

French to English Tech/Engineering Engineering (general) in a patent

Discussion

Mimita SWI (asker) Jan 7, 2021:
yes it is the patent I am translating now
Althea Draper Jan 7, 2021:
This might help. It's a patent for a 'chrono datation' device. It translates it as 'time-stamping'.

time-stamping

I think the author has just shortened the term to "datation" the second time she or he uses it, for stylistic reasons.
There's no reason why you can't repeat the term in English though.

"Horodatation" is possibly the more commonly-used term.

With the extra context, then yes, it would be date-stamping (with a dash).

Presumably used in astronomy for phenomena for which just a date is required, not a time as well.

You're welcome, Imène!
Note from asker:
thank you ; but would it be more accurate if I say "date stamping" as I have the context : (..le champ de vue (30) du ou de chaque instrument optique (12) est orienté vers un phénomène observable, et en ce qu’au cours de l’étape de datation (530), on détermine la date en temps de référence du phénomène observable à partir de la longueur d’onde et/ou de l’intensité du ou des signaux lumineux....)
