Norwegian term

kandidaten

Norwegian to English Law/Patents Law (general)
I am looking for a term other than the literal "candidate" for the Norwegian term kandidaten used in the context of a questioning in a police interview or with e.g. a commission of inquiry.

Lol My suggestion was “subject” :-)

Potential suspect? If it was a road traffic accident, the driver or cyclist. If it was a workplace accident, the employer or employee? Or refer to the person(s) involved as party/parties.
Per Bergvall Jan 7, 2021:
Person of interest Or perhaps just interviewee?
Charlesp (asker) Jan 7, 2021:
an accident (not sure if that helps for context)
Christopher Schröder Jan 7, 2021:
Subject?

the person brought in for questioning/helping police with their enquiries

I can't see that there is a natural one-word translation for this.

Thanks Carole. That's what I suspected.

suspect

A person thought to be guilty of a crime or offence.
Note from asker:
Thanks, but that may be too presumptive. Someone questioned may not actually be a suspect - though I am wondering if in Norwegian police/legal terminology if the term kandidaten does imply that the individual is suspected of committing the offence (i.e. not merely a witness).
