Historical architectural feature
In a document describing the Archbishops' Palace in Aix en Provence. Talking about a double spiral staircase in a grand hall. Context: "Ici, l’harmonie et l’équilibre particuliers qui se dégagent sont dus au fait que l’architecte a inscrit son escalier dans la diagonale du **carré de la cage**." (The harmony and balance mentioned refer to the staircase). I get that the staircase has been installed on the diagonal, but what is the sense of the "carré de la cage"? Thanks in advance for any help.

the architect aligned his/her diamond shaped staircase with the diagonal of the square stairwell
My alternative answer mimics Conor's just for the sake of comparison.
If you take a square, you can place a smaller diamond in it orientated at any angle (Conor's suggestion). To better describe the relationship of the staircase and stairwell, this would be my attempt although someone may have something better.

Maybe I've missed a link, but I can't see one to a picture of the actual staircase in question, which seems to me to be the first thing to look for.
