Spanish term

sierre circular del cráneo

Spanish to English Medical Medical (general) Autopsy report
Hi all,

I came across the above term in an autopsy report and I would be grateful for your help. Here's the context:

EXAMEN INTERNO:
Cabeza. Abertura tras incisión bimastoidea. retirado el cuero cabelludo y sierre circular del cráneo.

I've searched for the term on Google to no avail. I don't really know what to make of it. The structure of the sentence has thrown me. Could it be a typo? Or could it be referring to a part of the skull? Or maybe it refers to a type of saw?

Your thoughts would be most welcome!

The report was issued in Spain and the target audience is in the UK.

Many thanks,

Nisah

I could be wrong but I think a trephine is usually used on live patients, for biopsies and cerebral interventions. As I understand it, it cuts a small circular hole. I think in an autopsy they more often just cut away a piece of skull, as it isn't going to be needed later by the deceased. The procedure employed in this case is not clear from the text provided.

Circular cutting of the skull with a saw

I have happened to witness an autopsy in my early study days and the skull is cut in circular form with a circular saw. However, your text does not specify that the saw is circular. It does specify that the cutting is circular. I hope it helps.

The article describes the technique of opening the skull with the extraction of the brain in deceased fetuses and newborns.

Currently, newborns sometimes there are cases of “circular” opening of the skull (circular cutting) .

Autopsy

The scalp is pulled away from the skull in two flaps with the front flap going over the face and the rear flap over the back of the neck. The skull is then cut with a circular (or semicircular) bladed reciprocating saw to create a "cap" that can be pulled off, exposing the brain.

cut (with an electric saw)

¨Sierre¨ does not exist in Spanish.
I believe they are referring to ¨serrar¨: cut with an (electric) saw) the skull/cranium.

Con la sierra se corta el hueso del cráneo siguiendo una línea circular por encima de los arcos ciliares, continuando por el temporal (sin fascia y sin músculo) y terminando en el occipital.

If a brain autopsy is called for, the pathologist will make a cut across the crown of the head, from the bony bump behind one ear to the bump behind the other. He or she will then open the cranium using a special saw that cuts bone but leaves soft tissue unharmed.

neutral Cecilia Gowar : I do not believe they are referring to a particular saw but to the action itself (to saw).

circulkar sawing of (the top of the) skull

Though 'sierre' does not exist, it looks like a jargon medical word for 'sawing', the usual procedure of cutting the skull with a saw. A circular cut in this case, either on the top or around the skull.
