magnitud dineraria

Spanish to English Bus/Financial Law: Taxation & Customs Taxation, EDI, billing
SPAIN. This seems an awfully odd way to express "monetary amount"... and the "o de otra naturaleza" part is also throwing me off...

"La base imponible es la magnitud dineraria o de otra naturaleza, que resulta de la medición o valoración del hecho imponible, que se configura en la propia ..."

Althea Thanks for the suggestion, but I've read lots of similar definitions of the tax scenario in Spanish and it is still sometimes all Greek to me. At the end of the day, I went with "amount" this time, as that is what it means. I have a similar problem with "cuota", because sometimes you can translate it as quota, but sometimes it's a fee and sometimes it's a charge and sometimes it's also an amount. The "magnitude" bit just seemed a bit otherworldly. Thanks to everyone who has commented on this so far :-)

I think you'd be justified in substituting a definition adapted from an English website rather than trying to translate the Spanish. A close translation of the whole sentence would be difficult to understand.

For example, Collins defines tax base as "the assessed value of the taxable property, assets, and income within a specific tax district" - I'm not sure I agree with "district", but you could say "jurisdiction".

Better to state the country of origin - the late and great US-Mexican ProZ translator Henry Hinds: 'there are over 25 Spanish-speaking countries and many regional variation between them'. I have come across 'magnitudes gravadas por el tributo' on Cuba and it meant in that context: taxable turnover limits.

Thanks Chris. Great minds and all that, whilst small minds still haven't picked up on the macro-economic extrapolation to 'money supply'.
neutral philgoddard : I agree with "value in money", but not "money's worth" (which really appears only in "get your money's worth"), nor with "turnover" (this is about all taxes), nor your distinction between Spain and Cuba (this is an into English question).

A strange 'money's worth' comment coming from a UK-qualified accountant - besides which that part had not been in the question. Just as odd is the cold water poured over Cuba that relaxed foreign investment rules in 1990 as per my notarised ES->EN transl.
