French term

organisé en calage

French to English Other Archaeology Archaeological records
In a list digitising documents relating to a set of archaeological digs. The document is just a list of titles of sections, so there is not not much context. This title relates to a particular group of 46 photographic negatives, and the description says that it shows: "habitat et pierres **organisées en calage**". Does this mean stones placed to wedge something in position, or cushion something, or what? Thanks in advance for any help.

Daryo Oct 11, 2020:
you probably DO HAVE enough context the results of this archaeological exploration would have most probably been published - all you need to know is the name of the location and who and when done it - and then wade trough various "Annales d'archéologie" that are not all necessarily available on-line and, hey presto, you have all the information you need to make sense of any title or picture legend.

The idea of translating picture legends without seeing the actual pictures sounds to me like a pointless guessing game.

French term (edited): pierres organisées en calage
Selected

packing stones

As the image caption relates to an excavation rather than a standing building, I would suggest that « pierres organisées en calage » probably refers to packing stones within a posthole or postholes. In the context of a settlement, these would be the stones packed around the base of wooden posts to support the structure of a building.

neutral Daryo : it could makes sense if "organisées en calage" refers ONLY to "pierres" - and ONLY "postoles" are reinforced/lined with stones, otherwise what would be "habitat ... organisé en calage"???

In that case it would be « organisés en calage »

agree Daryo : possibly relevant - sometime what is left of buildings is more than just foundations - when digging you hit the roof first. // plenty of "archaeological finds" like that.
