English term

major (hier)

English to German Marketing Economics
Es geht in dem Text um die Auswirkungen der COVID-19-Krise. Im Text heißt es:

"For example, a global home and personal care **major** is manufacturing N95 masks; a global tobacco manufacturer is investing in the development of COVID-19 vaccines; a global alcohol beverages manufacturer is making hand sanitizers."

Alles schön und gut, nur: wie soll ich "major" hier übersetzen? Als "Hauptanbieter" oder dergleichen?

Bin für jede Hilfe dankbar.

@ Kim You know the reason why!
BTW: I'm not here to battle with peers, but to help the asker. I hope I could help him with references and arguments.

Herr Gleim How can I support your answer if I'm blocked from commenting on your answers? In any case, gofink provided an acceptable answer 15 hours before you did.
Johannes Gleim Aug 8, 2020:
With Brent & Rolf "major" as noun is rare but possible (proved in my answer). The ony question is how to convey the intent of "global" as well as "major" (wichtig, bedeutend, groß, größer). I propose to move its position as an addition to "global home and personal care" makes no sense, especially as the term "manufacturer' is missing. This term should be added behind "home and personal care".
Johannes Gleim Aug 8, 2020:
Wie zu erwarten Sobald ich eine alternative Antwort gebe, wird die erste unterstützt. Kenne ich seit vielen Jahren.
Kim Metzger Aug 8, 2020:
A "major" is manufacturing N95 masks is a very unusual way to use the term in standard English. OK, Rolf. I did some checking and see that in fact the term IS used that way in some financial texts.

@Kim Webster's New Collegiate Dictionary 1979:

major n
1 ...
2a one that is superior in rank, importance, station, or performance
2b, 3, 4a, 4b, 5 ...
Kim Metzger Aug 7, 2020:
Yes but the adjective would precede the noun. Here it is used as a noun.
Brent Sørensen Aug 7, 2020:
major has several definitions One is “A large, commercially successful company” (Ein großes, kommerziell erfolgreiches Unternehmen)
Kim Metzger Aug 7, 2020:
major is nonsense here. The only context where this formulation would make sense in US English is in education. A home economics major - someone studying home economics. I think it's a typo for producer or something similar.
Renate Radziwill-Rall Aug 7, 2020:
Idee Ein großer / bedeutender usw. Marktplayer
Rolf Keller Aug 7, 2020:
"Ein bedeutender Anbieter/Dienstleister/Hersteller im Bereich xxx"

"Einer der Großen im Bereich xxx"

"Ein Branchenriese im Bereich xxx"
