Quelle aventure que la destruction de ce pont en novembre 1978 !
Ce pont inauguré en 1861 permettait de relier le quartier de La Chaume à la ville des Sables en traversant les chantiers de la Cabaude mais il servait aussi à désengorger le chenal des vases qui s'y accumulaient.
C'était un **pont-vanne** qui chassait les alluvions de manière à permettre un meilleur accès au port et faciliter le parcours des navires dans le chenal.
Sa destruction eut lieu le matin du 7 novembre en 1978, selon la décision du maire de l'époque, M. Albert Prouteau, pour permettre la mise en place d'un port dédié à la plaisance dans l'ancien bassin des chasses.

'Vanne' alone is translated as 'weir', but 'pont-vanne' is translated as 'sluice-bridge' and 'sluice bridge'. See sections 204, 246, 314, and 330.

: Your examples show that écluses are locks. Vannes are sluices which regulate water flow between tides and to operate locks.
